Noel's Story - Pre-Nursing

Upon returning to education as a mature student at St. Conleths Community College both tutors and fellow students made it an easy and enjoyable experience, throughout the year the students bonded through group assignments and team-building exercises and I've made some close lifelong friends who helped me realise my potential. I'm currently awaiting exam results and I hope to continue to third-level education to study nursing, I'd recommend St. Conleths to anybody hoping to further their education or to gain skills to help them further their career.

Stephanie's Story - Pre-Nursing

I have done my leaving certificate in 1998 and decided to return to adult education in 2014 at St Conleths Community College to complete a Fetac Level 5 in Pre-nursing studies. On returning to education as a mature student I was both nervous and a little overwhelmed. However, the tutors and other students supported and encouraged me during the course and I am delighted to say that I graduated from St Conleths with distinctions in all of my modules. I realised my potential during this year and this has now encouraged me to further my education. I have applied to colleges in the hope of progressing on and studying mental health nursing.

I would recommend St. Conleths to anybody who wishes to re-enter education either with the hope of progressing on to college or gaining the skills needed to further their career. The support and encouragement from the tutors is excellent within the college.

Stephanie O’Brien.

Bernie's story - Childcare supervisor

My name is Bernie O’Connor, I am 42 years of age and a wife and mother. I left school at an early age due to the death of my mother. I completed two years in secondary school before leaving to help care for my three brothers who were all very young at the time.

Being the only girl and the oldest child in my family I have been caring for people for a long time. I got my first job at 15 and have been working ever since, I think I am due for retirement any day soon haha!

I have always loved learning and had a longing to return to education. I got married to the love of my life and have three lovely children, while they were small I returned to education to better myself in life and improve my job prospects, the first course I completed was a level 5 in Healthcare support which had 8 modules it was difficult at the time as I was an early school leaver and I was so happy when I completed the course, I realised that I was able to return to education and be able to finish the course this was important to me as I had a fear of returning as I had been out of school so long.

I then got very brave and went back again this time I took part in a level 7 course through the University of Limerick, I studied special educational needs. I was working in the community as a home help at the time with the H.S. E. South so when I completed my diploma, I was given a job as a special needs assistant, I would travel around to the local preschools working with special needs children in a mainstream preschool setting.

I then wanted to do level 6 in childcare but was living in rural Kerry and there were no courses available locally

Due to the recession, my Husband and I decided to move to Kildare as we think our children will have a better chance of education and work in the future which is important to us. I got a job at St. Bridget’s Hospice in the Curragh in Newbridge and worked there for two years as a carer. I started looking for childcare courses and my cousin recommended St. Conleth’s Community College as she had completed her level 5 in childcare there. I applied for the childcare supervisor course and went for an interview and was accepted on the course which I was delighted about as I wanted to return to working with children.

I started the childcare supervisor course in September 2014. I really enjoyed my time at St. Conleth’s community college and made some great friends and met some lovely helpful teachers during the year. After completing the course, I got a job as relief staff in the childcare centre where I completed my work placement.

To conclude I would urge any person who has a fear of further education to give it a try like I did, I am so happy I pushed myself into adult education and have met some lovely people along the way!

Teresa's Story - Business & IT

In 2013 I gave up my job in Dublin in the hope of gaining employment nearer home. After a couple of months, I realised getting a job would not be as easy as I had thought, and with this, in mind, I decided to go back to education. I opted for the Business & IT course which was recommended to me by a friend. This course offered me the chance to build on my existing skills along with learning some new ones. There were a variety of modules that I found both interesting and challenging, and the tutors were always on hand to offer help and advice. Throughout the year I felt my confidence growing and I gained valuable knowledge necessary for working within an office environment. I thoroughly enjoyed my year in St Conleth’s where I made many new friends. On completion of the course, I was successful in getting a job where I made use of the skills that I had gained. Completing this course gave me the courage and confidence to go back to work.
