The Aims of the Guidance Counselling Service in St. Conleth’s Community College
Guidance counselling aims to provide a caring and supportive service through the provision of counselling in three key areas:
- Educational – guide students around subject and course options as well as providing study techniques. Advise on further/higher education options.
- Vocational – advise students about career, employment and apprenticeship options.
- Personal and Social – Support students in their holistic development.
Our aims also encompass the following:
- To provide career guidance to all students.
- To be available for personal counselling to students who may be in difficulty or crisis. As Guidance Counsellors, we will always create a safe and non-judgemental atmosphere, allowing the student to declare, accept and progress. This will be achieved holistically by supportive listening and accurate reflection.
- To provide information regarding subject choice to enable students to make suitable choices at key junctures in their schooling.
- To assist in the administering of testing to first and third-year students.
- To provide time to work with first-year students regarding transition issues.
- To build and strengthen links between the school, colleges of further and higher education, local businesses, and the voluntary sector.
- To plan and deliver a curricular guidance programme which is reviewed regularly.
