The University of Southampton

Higher Education Advisors Day Wednesday 13th May 2015.

On Tuesday 12th May two members of the Nursing Studies/Social Care department Georgina Finnegan and Bernadette Gleeson flew out to Southampton to attend the Universities Higher Education Advisors day at the invitation of the faculty of Nursing.

Mr. Jim Bird Senior Admissions Officer and Senior Nurse Tutor welcomed the staff of St. Conleth’s and renewed acquaintances as he and other members of the faculty have been visiting the College annually for the past two years. Mr Bird informed the staff of the success of our students on their nursing courses and how he and the faculty are delighted to continue our relationship and strengthen links going forward.

This was a very interesting day where the future of third level education in England was discussed and the importance of further education as a progression route to degree level.

The conference was opened by Mary  Curnock Cook OBE , chief executive of UCAS, who gave a comprehensive talk on the problems facing  the third level sector and the need to continue to source students with a high level of education.

The afternoon session included a visit to the Nursing Faculty where the St. Conleth’s delegates were able to meet up with their former Nursing Studies Students who are now studying nursing in Southampton. There was also a tour of the faculty and all the resources available to the students.

Overall this was a very beneficial visit for our staff as not only do we now have a wider knowledge of the UCAS system and  the English third level sector in general we are also in a stronger position to inform our students and their parents of the excellent facilities and opportunities available at the University of Southampton. This type of knowledge is invaluable to parents and students when they are trying to make future educational decisions. It is important to stress however that it is due to the high achievement  the hard work and determination of our students on the St. Conleth’s Nursing Studies course that this  link has been developed and continues to blossom!.

Review of 2014/2015 - Pre Nursing Coordinator

This has been yet another very successful year on the Nursing Studies course. It is hard to believe that we are now in our fifth year of existence.

The students arrived in September nervous but enthusiastic for the year ahead. The year started with all students undertaking a course in Occupational First Aid followed by a certificate in Patient Manual Handling. They really enjoyed this and all got excellent results. This was to prepare them for their work placement which took place in February/March 2015.

This year we had a wide and varied assortment of places to offer for work experience in order to facilitate student’s decision on the discipline of nursing to follow next year. Our work places include Naas General Hospital, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin, The Rotunda Hospital Dublin, Clane General Hospital, Mental Health Services Kildare and Wicklow, KARE services, Platinum Clubhouse along with many excellent Nursing homes. We would like to extend a huge thank you to all those places because without their help and support our course would not be as successful as it. This work placement is an invaluable experience for our students as it gives them an insight into the world of nursing.

Just recently we had a surprise visit from one of our first ever Nursing Studies Graduates Molly O'Toole. Molly is now a fully qualified Staff Nurse working in a busy High Dependency unit in Scotland. It was lovely to see her and how she had succeeded in her goal to become a nurse.

Since returning from placement the students have been busy demonstrating their newly learned skills and studying for their upcoming exams.

We wish all of them the very best of luck in the future and we look forward to having them visit us next year to let us know how they are getting on.

We have some Mature Students also studying at the moment for the Mature Entry exam for Nursing and we wish them all the very best of look.

Below are some photographs to show a little snap shot of the year 2014/15 on the Nursing Studies course at St. Conleths.

STUDENT BLOG

We are now nearly into the spring and the nursing studies course here at St Conleths Community College is quickly progressing towards its end. It is hard to believe how quickly the time has flown by since September when we all started this course. All of the students  are progressing through this course with great determination and confidence.

We have been fortunate enough to have many visitors to speak to the class these included past students telling of their experience with this course and how they are settling in now in their various colleges doing their nursing degrees. The class had a visit from Platinum clubhouse, to talk to us about mental health awareness.  Also we had a representative from South-Hampton college talk to the group about the opportunities available to them and already some of the students have their interviews with them in the coming weeks. We wish them all the very best when the times comes. Last week we had some of the students go to England for interviews for another college and just today one of them has received an offer of nursing in September depending on her results from this course.

This Friday as a preparation for mental health awareness with addictions the Pre –Nursing students are surrendering their mobile phones to be locked away for the entire day. As we came to the group decision that we were all a little bit addicted to our phones (just a little bit! J. This will show the students how easy it is to become addicted to something without realising it. It will also give them skills in dealing with addiction at first hand.

That’s all for now as we are all busy studying for upcoming exams and preparing skills demonstrations J.

We hope to do the now Annual Disability Awareness Day late March early April.

NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE THAT CHOICE ABOUT YOUR FUTURE CAREER SO DON’T   WAIT ………. APPLY ON LINE NOW FOR THIS VERY ENJOYABLE AND WORTHWHILE COURSE.

PRE NURSING STUDIES

WELCOME TOTHE STUDENTS OF 2014/15

It is hard to believe that we are heading into our fifth year of Pre Nursing her in St. Conleths.

We had yet another very successful year with all students achieving very high standards.

Over sixty per cent of our class of 2013/2014 are beginning their undergraduate programmes in varied disciplines of nursing. We wish all of them every success as they begin this exciting journey.

This year we have twenty eight students with our biggest ever male intake of four students.

We welcome all and look forward to a busy, eventful and rewarding year.

The students all started very well when they achieved excellent results in their Occupational First Aid Module taken the first few weeks of term.

We are now looking forward to welcoming our many guest speakers that will join us throughout the year.

We will have a representative of the University of Southampton who has requested that he can come and talk to the group in the coming weeks about studying in Southampton. Five of the 2013/2014 class are now studying in this university.

We will be joined by the management and members of Platinum Club House to highlight Mental Health Awareness Week in early October.

The attached Photograph shows the Nurses hard at work practising their newly learned skills. much more to come they are only starting but I think you will agree they are looking very professional already.
